Tree Huggers

I want to give you a little more insight of where my beliefs are and the system I feel we need to build to be the most effective organization. I also want to let you know that I value each one of you as a person, and not just a name on my list. That is why I try to respond personally to each one of you when you send me a note. I know it takes a while sometimes, but that is because I get a ton of mail.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Each of us can make a difference. And collectively, we can make a world changing difference. I believe that at this point we still do not possess the ideas necessary to make these changes, but because of our association, they will soon come to light, and then we will be a strong changing force in this world.

I try to take a middle of the road stand on the cause of saving the Earth, because this is where we can educate the most people. Personally, I could get, and privately at times do, very fanatical. But if we take this stand in public, I believe we will lose much needed support.

Common sense should rule in our campaign, along with understanding and temperance. As an example, let us talk about trees.

TREE HUGGERS:

I get slammed a lot for wanting to save trees. I do not take a stand to kill no trees, but I do think we should not take more than is replenishable. I also wince at the idea of ruining eco-systems when destroying forests, along with many desirable, (and undesirable), species of plants, animals, insects, and other life forms. It is possible we have already destroyed the cure to all our diseases in an unknown plant.

We weigh in the balance the right for all living things with our right to survive and thrive. Ideally, I would like to see all trees used for commercial cutting to come from farms instead of naturally growing forests. I know there are many arguments for both sides of this, and I want all of us to hear both sides. I know there are many on our list that objectively provide the other side, and this is helpful to both sides. I will publish these views as objectively as possible.

EXTREMISTS:

I understand when one extremist says that killing any tree is murder, and I can understand when the other extremist says trees are here for us to use. I do not intend to ever bring these two sides together, but I do want to effect as many people as possible towards conserving more than they are now.

I believe that we should not take more than we are provided, we should plant as many trees as we cut, and we should try to leave delicate eco-systems untouched.

TREES:

I have felt the life in a tree, perhaps even communicated with a tree. There have been times I cried when trees died even a natural death. Two summers ago I took my family back to Sheridan, Wyoming to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Barb and I hiked into the mountains so that I could show her some of the wildlife and trees. One of my favorite areas had been utterly destroyed by tree cutters. I can tell you that part of my heart died there with them.

Perhaps the timber company had a legal right, but why could not they have taken only a few. Why did they have to level hundreds of acres? The beauty of that mountain that I remembered since my childhood was gone.

I am called a tree hugger, a tree lover, and even a tree*****. For this, I am proud to be called.

I DO USE TREES:

Yes I live in a wooden house. Yes, I sit on a wooden bench. Yes I eat at a wooden table. I believe that when in harmony, trees are meant to give up life for us to survive and thrive. But we should do so in a way that is disruptive as little.

By conserving on how much paper we use, we conserve how many trees are killed. This is why Email really tickles me! I figure we save about 150,000 sheets of paper each week with our Email newsletter. By finding alternative sources for paper we save trees. That is why we promote treeless paper at no profit. By recycling paper we save trees. And conserving can be profitable!

I knew a man in Cheyenne, Wyoming that built an entire house from scraps left over from construction sites. I have been on construction crews, and the waste is

tremendous. I don't see why we should not build a house out of wood, but isn't there something that can be done with the tremendous amount of waste? There is probably a market for scrap wood. I do know you can make presswood or chipwood from it.

Yet many companies throw the wood away, filling landfills, and killing more trees.

The American natives thanked the spirit of the buffalo after killing it, for the life it gave him/her. Nothing on the buffalo was wasted. Even the hoofs were boiled to make glue. Because of this, the American Native lived in harmony with the Buffalo for thousands of years.

Then the white man came in and destroyed the herds of buffalo within a matter of a few years, because they did not respect the life that the buffalo gave them.

CONSERVE, PRESERVE:

This is what I am talking about. I do not think it is wrong to kill trees for surviving and thriving, but not at the cost of annihilation of an entire species. The original Americans knew that if they destroyed all the buffalo, they would have no more food. They also felt that their supreme forces expected them to preserve that which they were given. Aren't we that smart?

If we are using more trees than are growing, we are killing off a species. I have read and heard about the devastation of the rain forest, and honestly I am not educated enough on the matter to speak intelligently about it. But I am working on educating myself on this.

Soon, I hope to be able to personally travel to the rainforests to see if there is any insight the actual sight and contact with the area and people may provide. When I am able to do this, I will take a laptop along and report what I am finding to you.

But, if we are killing off more trees in the rainforest than can naturally be replenished, doesn't common sense tell us that eventually it will be gone?

Are the rainforests important to the Earth? This we must learn more about. I am sure there are many in our on-line family here that could provide us with expertise on this subject. But one thing I am sure of, the rainforest is important to the humans, animals, and species that live there.

Many people believe that without the rainforests, we will not have enough trees to replenish oxygen needed for this Earth to stay balanced. Is this true? I do not know. But if it is, I think we are in a lot of trouble.

CAN WE DESTROY THE EARTH?

I am told over and over that we humans think too much of ourselves to believe that we have the ability to destroy the Earth. This, in my opinion, is a head in the sand approach to the problem. 100 years ago, would you have believe we had the ability to destroy an entire city with one bomb? If this opinion is taken by too many in this world, it will surely be the downfall of all of us.

I believe we do have the ability to wipe the face of this Earth with complete destruction. I also believe that a relatively small group of people can educate and raise awareness of the need to preserve to enough people in order to balance out the destruction that is currently escalating year by year.

We are going to balance out our beliefs with real world information and facts. This will mostly come from articles and personal reports provided by you. I know that some of you are in countries besides the US. You will help us to round out our world view if you will participate with us.
